Shevchenko Climate

 

The Shevchenko deposit is located in northwest Kazakhstan which experiences a strong continental climate, characterised by  a warm summer (+19 to absolute max of 40°C),  a cold winter (-17 to absolute minimum of -40°C). Winter lasts for about 4 to 5 months (from November to March) and sees relatively little snow, although there is steady snow cover almost everywhere from the middle of November. Annual precipitation is low at 300–330 mm, with a frost-free period of 120–140 days.

  • 1952 – Deposit discovery.
  • 1967 – Soviet reserves approved and feasibility study.
  • October 2003 – Due diligence completed by Wardell Armstrong International.
  • November 2004 – Exclusive Option Agreement signed for Shevchenko.
  • March 2004 – Scoping study by Mintek, South Africa completed.
  • May 2004 – Oriel increased it stake to 90%. Muzbel 10% holding.
  • June 2004 – Small scale 6 tonne smelting test at Mintek.
  • July 2004 – Completion of confirmation core drilling.
  • August 2004 – Infill core drilling AND bulk sampling.
  • September 2004 – Preliminary assessment study results released.
  • December 2005 – Full feasibility study results released.
